As a member of the Rwandan diaspora, Lama spent seven years in post-genocide Rwanda, transforming challenges into opportunities. Collaborating with the COVAGA weavers’ cooperative in Gashora, he helped turn invasive water hyacinths into an engine for economic empowerment and environmental preservation. His work expanded into combating malnutrition by introducing household kitchen gardens and training local trainers, leaving an enduring legacy in agriculture and food security.

Back in Canada, Lama has been instrumental in revitalizing Hogan’s Alley, a historic Black neighborhood in Vancouver. Through advocacy and collaboration, he has played a key role in restoring this cultural hub, ensuring it stands as a model for equitable urban development.
